Chinese Fans Outraged at Announcement of Chinese Slam Dunk Film

The announcement of a Chinese film version of Slam Dunk has triggered an immense response from fans within China. Diehard fans of the Slam Dunk anime were exceptionally critical, fearing the classic series would be ruined just like what happened to the novels of Jin Yong (the film version of the novels weren't exactly great). The diehard fans declared that they would target the lead role actors Li Xue Qin (Kaede Rukawa) and Li Yi Lin (Hanamichi Sakuragi). The fans trash-talked the actors on bulletin boards, some of the more extreme SD fanatics announced that they plan to attack the two actors in an effort to prevent them from destroying the image of Slam Dunk.

This is not the first time Li Xue Qin's contract company encountered difficulties in arranging a film version of Slam Dunk. The company had already made plans for the film in 2004, but one of the producers stole the ideas and submitted them elsewhere, forcing the company to delay their plans to 2006. Unfortunately for them, the public response was far from favorable. The news of Li Xue Qin playing Kaede Rukawa turned into a source of extreme dissatisfaction for SD fanatics, some wanted to detain him, others left threatening messages on his company's website, others attempted to hack the website. The fans demanded the company to not use Li Xue Qin, threatening that they would "unite the SD fanatics from all over the country and assault Li Xue Qin. Li Yi Lin, who will be playing Hanamichi Sakuragi, received similar disapproval and objections from diehard fans.

Responding to these objections, the company asked the fans to remain calm, and claimed that the Chinese version of Slam Dunk will be completely different from the Japanese version. The only similarity, the complany claimed, was that the story revolved around basketball.

That's a bit extreme, but I

That's a bit extreme, but I still think anime should remain anime. Especially sport animes like Slam Dunk.

uh...ok

does this means that they'll be creating a different story and cashing in on the title and characters? that's low in my book

Well, I know I heard they're

Well, I know I heard they're doing the same thing with a Korean version. It's a completely different story with the same names and the same title. Which is... really pointless?

Wow, if it's different from

Wow, if it's different from the Japanese version and only revolves around basketball, shouldn't they just change the name and the characters? It seems like some one's going to die from mob frenzy.

Whoa. While the company's

Whoa. While the company's ideas for the movie may not be the best I've ever heard, the reactions of the fans are way overboard.

I can't say I haven't been known to go on extreme rants at times. The desecration of a fandom is indeed a travesty. But seriously threatening actors? What rational person would think that is acceptable?

Fanatics are hard to

Fanatics are hard to decipher. Threatening bigtime actors because of their "unsuitability" is hardly new. I was really surprised, at the fact that the SD fandom still existed. T_T

Two words for making this

Two words for making this kind of crap: money making.

Yeah that's right, those SD rights do cost quite a bit of money, you think Inoue'll refuse?

And besides, there are some good live action animes... I think @_@

Okay maybe it'll suck. Let

Okay maybe it'll suck. Let it sink, but to threaten to hurt the actors to prevent it being made? Someone needs to get OUT of the house and away from their TV set!

Wow, if it??????s different

Wow, if it??????s different from the Japanese version and only revolves around basketball, shouldn??????t they just change the name and the characters? It seems like some one??????s going to die from mob frenzy.

Hear, hear! :doraemon:

Well, apparently Slam Dunk

Well, apparently Slam Dunk is really popular over there, so it's basically just the name to get people in.

@Saliere: Eh, did you hear about Chinese people going batshit in some MMORPG because there was a red circle (resembled Japan's flag, I guess)? This is not surprising coming from them.
